Church Buildings and Expansion

The Sanctuary was built during the church's period as a Disciples of Christ Church. The first expansion on its facility was in 1972 when the L-shaped building housing Briggs Hall was extended with additional office and class rooms and a fellowship hall and kitchen. Another expansion with the educational building and present offices was done in 1980.

Preschool and Kindergarten

Sunrise Preschool and Kindergarten began in 1974 under the direction of Mae Ferris. Ms Ferris was then in her 70's and she agreed to start the ministry with the understanding that she would only do the work for a year. Penny Ridgeway assumed the role of our preschool director in 1975 until she accepted a position with Florida International University. Nancy Jones arrived in 1978 and was hired as our Director of Christian Education. In this dual role, she supervised the preschool and the Christian Education ministry of the church.

Under the leadership of our present director, the school has been expanded from a preschool to an academy, with classes for children in preschool, kindergarten, and 1st through 3rd grades.

Our preschool is interested in developing a child's social and academic life so he or she will be ready for first grade. We also emphasize Christian and spiritual nurture.

Preschool Directors include:
Mae Ferris, 1974
Penny Ridgeway, 1975-1978
Nancy Jones, 1978-1997
Neil Wyrick, 1997 Interim
Terri Vega, 1997-1999
Beth Wilson, 1999-2001

Sunrise started its youth program in 1971 under the direction of Bill and Pat Spencer, a couple from the Miami Shores Presbyterian Church who agreed to follow their former Associate Pastor, Don Davis, when he came to Sunrise. They agreed to provide the youth leadership for one year. After that year, another couple from the Miami Shores Church, John and Harriet Davis, came to serve for several years as the youth directors.

Many people still remember the dynamic youth ministry that was organized by the Davis family. When their sons were old enough to enter the youth program, John and Harriet felt it was important for their children to have someone other than their own parents be their youth leader. They retired from this work and were replaced briefly by church member Cindy Blake and then by Sunrise's first Associate Pastor, Mike Armistead. When Mike accepted a call to another church, church member Mary Jo Baughman directed the youth for a year.

Sunrise's second Associate Pastor was Mike Davis. Mike was the son of the Senior Pastor and had grown up in the Sunrise Youth Group. When Mike accepted a call to another church, he recommended Sue Masaitis, a church member, as his replacement.

Sue served for a little more than a year, and was replaced by church members Linda and Albert Vinent.

Linda and Albert did an outstanding job as volunteer youth leaders. After two years, they passed the torch to a partnership ministry with Young Life.

Beginning toward the end of the interim period between our pastors Don Davis and Maynard Pittendreigh, the Session agreed to a three-year Young Life Program, leading to the hiring of James Smith as our new Young Life Director. He served from 1996 until 1999.
