Session Notes

Rev. Rivera provided a summary of his pastoral activities:

The outgoing Deacons will be recognized on Sunday, January 14.  Rev. Rivera has already provided Elder/Deacon training (of new Elders/Deacons).

Rev. Rivera proposed several committee leaders:

  • Christian Education – Viviana Haddon
  • Outreach & Evangelism – Mary Ann Engel / Hopeton Salmon [in-training]
  • Personnel/Nominating – Carmen Stewart / Lalisha Mack [in-training]
  • Finance (new) – Celia Pacheco [quarterly meetings]
  • Worship – Celia Pacheco

Chuck Cunningham resigned from session, as the Cunningham’s will be moving out of the area (Germany).

Finance and Property

Accepted Apple Air Conditioning quote of $1600 for replacing coil, filter-drier and recharging of the Air Conditioning adjacent to the business manager’s office.

The Sunrise water well is showing signs of collapsing.  Recommendation is to replace it, requiring several permits.  Note: The pump is in good condition.  Final cost of drilling is dependent on depth needed to build the new well.

Accepted proposal to drill new water well, at approximate cost of $2850.  If funding is not available within the budget, the congregation will need to be solicited for approval of funds.

A motion was passed  to install glass doors in the SCA director’s office located in the administrative wing, to be paid for by the SCA.

Christian Education Report

Due to Pam Carey’s health, the youth lock-in was cancelled in late December.

New Business

Several topics were brought up, as listed below.

a. SCA Pricing for 2007-2008 School Year:

b. The Lenten Season Schedule

New items within holy week were proposed by Rev. Rivera:

  • Messianic Seder on Maundy Thursday
  • Tenebrae Service on Good Friday
  • Easter consolidated to one service at 10:30 a.m.
  • Skipping the Early Christian dinner to vary this season’s offerings from Sunrise.

The above schedule was approved.

c. A revised yearlong schedule was provided and accepted by consensus; it will remain a work in progress.

d. Request from Yvette Aguilera [member of our church] and Marcos Rivera [pastor’s son] to begin a Young Adult ministry outreach.  Inviting young people in our church that are over 21 years old to gather socially and build upon church foundations to see how this ministry can grow and develop.
e. Session Retreat – January 20th 9:00 am- 3:00 pm (Retreat postponed that Session members could attend a memorial service for Randy Green.)

f. Training and Elder Orientation will take place January 23 at 7:30 P.M.

g. Boy Scout Charter agreement

The Boy Scouts provided a Charter agreement document to Rev. Rivera stating that Sunrise is a sponsor of the pack that meets at the church (pack 592) for this year.  It was agreed to sign this by common consent.

Another pack, which does not meet at Sunrise, requested for Sunrise to sign their charter.  This request was declined since they don’t have any affiliation with the church.

A benefit golf tournament followed by dinner for a fundraiser for the Scholarship Fund was approved.  It is called ‘Nine and Dine’, and will be held at Grand Palm Country Club in Pembroke Pines.  The information was provided by Joyce Lipman.  The session was very positive and appreciative of this effort.
